Miley Stewart is an ordinary girl who lives a double-life as successful pop sensation
Hannah Montana. She tries to keep it a secret so that she can live a normal life. She lives with her brother, Jackson (
Jason Earles), and her father, Robbie Ray (
Billy Ray Cyrus), who is also her manager and producer, and was a country singer at one time. Miley's mother died when she was young. Roxy (
Frances Callier) is Hannah Montana's bodyguard who protects Miley, Jackson, and Robbie Ray, even when they don't want her to.
Miley is originally from Tennessee. It is unclear when exactly she moved to California, but it is known that she has been living in Malibu at least since she was in the 6th grade.
When Miley first arrives to Seaview Middle School she meets her best friends
Lilly Truscott (
Emily Osment) and
Oliver Oken (
Mitchel Musso), who eventually figure out her secret. In season 2 she is a high school freshman (9th grade). Due to her double life, Miley is often involved in awkward situations, but even in her normal life as Miley, she makes the same mistakes anyone would. Her problems continue when she moves on to the same high school her brother attends.
Miley's enemies are
Amber Addison (
Shanica Knowles) and
Ashley Dewitt (
Anna Maria Perez de Tagle), who are constantly mean to her and her friends, but happen to love Hannah Montana. Later she gets used to her school and meets a cute famous teen actor named Jake Ryan.
In the episode
New Kid in School,
Jake Ryan, (
Cody Linley), moves to her school. At first she is jealous of him because of all of the special attention he gets; she finally realizes her feelings for him after Jake told her (as Hannah) that he can't stop thinking of Miley. In the episode
People Who Use People, Miley starts going out with Jake, but then he has to fly to
Romania for four months to shoot a movie. He came back in the episode
Achy Jakey Heart, Part 1 and
Achy Jakey Heart, Part 2, where they became a couple, but broke up and remained close friends.
Miley has a signature phrase that she is known for saying whenever someone states the obvious: "Ya think?!". The character's comical persona is also known for being extremely
deadpan.

Lilly is the best friend of
Miley Stewart and
Oliver Oken. A huge
Hannah Montana fan, even before she found out Miley's secret, Lilly discovered Miley was Hannah Montana while sneaking into her dressing room after a concert.
[4] When Lilly slipped up and called Miley 'Hannah', Miley became upset, but the two made up and remained best friends. Though they still argue often, they always make up. Lilly is outgoing, fun, a little bit skater-punk, a little tom-boyish, and definitely a good friend. Lilly cannot sing and neither can her family according to episode
Song Sung Bad.
Whenever Lilly seems to like an idea of another character (usually Miley) she will respond with either a happy dance or by saying "Ooh Lola Likey" (when she is dressed as her alias, Lola).
"Lola" Aliases
Lilly attends concerts with
Hannah Montana under the alias of "Lola".
- Lola LaFonda: Has a dark long, straight red wig and punk clothes. This is the time where Lilly brings her dog, Thor, with her in a limo accompanied by Hannah. Was seen in Miley Get Your Gum.
Lilly has blonde hair and loves
skateboarding and
surfing. She also loves cute clothes and boys though she is a very tomboyish character. She tends to be seen wearing caps or beanies in every episode in the first season, but not as much in the second season. Slightly picky about her appearance, Lilly wears contact lenses
[5] and can be more excited about wearing cool clothes instead of solving problems, and she loves Miley/Hannah's shoes. She was a cheerleader in episode
Mascot Love, but it was never heard about her cheerleading career after that. Lilly had a crush on an actor in the show
Jake Ryan (
Cody Linley), but convinces Miley to pursue him instead when Lilly realizes how much he likes Miley. She also had a crush on Oliver in pre-school, but she insists she only held his hand so she could borrow his crayons. In high school, Lilly gets asked to the dance by Matt Marshall, the boy Lilly has been crushing on for awhile. But when she changes her image from a skater-punk type girl to a preppy type girl (in which Miley convinced her to change), he stands her up. All works out in the end when Matt confesses to having a crush on Lilly as well, and likes her just the way she is. The two then become a couple although Matt wouldn't appear in future episodes. Later, Lilly dates Lucas, and Miley finds him cheating on Lilly with another girl, in the episode
My Best Friend's Boyfriend. She has a father who likes bran muffins. It is revealed in
When You Wish You Were the Star that Lilly has a birth mark shaped like a poodle on her buttcheeks.
[6] She is also known for fainting when something exciting happens, such as flinging herself out of her chair upon seeing Jake and Miley kiss for the first time.

Oliver and
Lilly Truscott have been best friends since preschool, and he has been friends with
Miley Stewart since she moved to town. Initially, Oliver was in love with Hannah Montana, however this ended after he learned that Hannah was really Miley. Oliver's self-proclaimed nicknames are "Smokin' Oken" or "The Ollie Trolley." He helps students open lockers at their school and is therefore also known as "Locker Man" and "The Locker Doctor." He is fond of impressing "the ladies," and thinks that they all like him as well. Oliver got his first girlfriend, Becca Weller, with Miley's help, however they almost broke up soon after due to Miley's meddling.
[3] He has had a great fear of gum chewing ever since his Aunt Harriet accidentally spat gum on him as a baby, and is often bullied by Chad the Chomper (
Kyle Kaplan), who chews gum, and Donnie (
Creagen Dow), who eats several cans of beans to annoy Oliver with his flatulence. Oliver is also very sensitive about public speaking and being embarrassed, but he is otherwise loyal to Lilly and Miley. He shares Lilly's interests in skating and surfing
[4]; Oliver apparently likes
Jessica Simpson, as he said in
Torn Between Two Hannahs that he had a dream that a room was filled with many Jessicas (and he had more than one chest hair). Also Oliver in an episode where he has to take care of a flour baby, Oliver is revealed to have a strong desire to become a father. Miley often grabs Oliver by the shirtfront, causing him to make comments like, "You ripped out my only chest hair!", and "If I stay friends with you, I'll never have chest hair, will I?!" (
Me and Rico Down by the School Yard). He is
very over-protective of his one and only chest hair that he "needs" for gym class.
In episodes featuring
Jake Ryan, he is also found frequently trying to take advantage of Jake's popularity, proclaiming over a microphone that Jake is Oliver's close personal friend who says that he is the second coolest guy at school.
[5] When Jake attends the school's 70s dance, Oliver plans to get a date because after Jake picks his date "...there'll be a hundred depressed girls looking for a shoulder to cry on." In the end, Oliver attends the dance alone.
His mom is a police officer, as mentioned in the second season. "I'm not crammed inside your... My Mom's a cop!"
His full name is Oliver Oscar Oken, referred to the Triple O in the episode
Ooo, Ooo, Itchy Woman( the nickname is a play on the
professional wrestler Triple H). He gives out his cell phone number in
Mascot Love, which he first says is 555-0121, but later in the episode, he says it's 555-4127 due to a change in cell phone plans.
In the October 2007 edition of
Disney Adventures Magazine, there was a sneak peak of an episode called
No Sugar, Sugar where they find out Oliver has
diabetes.
Mike Standley the Third
He created an alias, rapper Mike Standley the Third
[2], as his disguise in the episode
Everybody Was Best-Friend Fighting in order to attend events with Lola and Hannah. His first
disguise was a
vampire since it was very last minute. When he introduced himself to a Latin tennis player that Lola and Hannah adore, he first said his name was Mike Stand (he had to think of a name quick so he looked at the
microphone stand and said Mike Stand). He quickly corrected himself and that's how he came up with the name, Mike Standley the Third
[2]. He also made a fake Goatee made out of armpit hair that Lola said no one would notice, but Hannah ends up noticing. He switched outfits with one of the members of the crew so his alias outfit consists of a zip-up
hoodie, sweat pants, up-side down
visor, and
aviators, and his armpit hair
Goatee (though this varies depending on the times). Miley, as Hannah, called him "Mikey Standley" in the episode
Everybody Was Best-Friend Fighting.

Laid back and casual, Jackson is typically the comic relief of the series, using one-liners or calling back names. Jackson is a high school, mediocre student who is far more interested in food, girls, his image, and would much rather be silly than serious, and is best friends with Cooper. At one point, he attempted to secretly date Cooper's sister, but broke up with her because she wasn't worth the trouble.
Like his dad, always treats his sister as Miley rather than Hannah, and always keeps her secret. To help keep Miley's secret, Jackson once posed as her boyfriend, and began using his new-found fame as a magic ticket to popularity. He also does not have a disguise. Whenever Miley has done something wrong, he starts forming an excuse (i.e., "I tried to stop her") that does not involve him although he is usually strongly implicated, and their dad often finds out anyway. "He is a big kiss-up," as stated by his dad.
Jackson has a car that is stereotypically considered a "girl's car," but he did not know until Cooper pointed it out. His father changed the horn from a high-pitched squeak to a truck horn, and made the car a
lowrider, with hydraulics and loud sound system, as well as painting it blue. He mentions in
Debt It Be that he paid off some of the money by selling tissues used by Miley during her
sinus infection on the Internet (he sold them as "Used by Hannah Montana" for $37.95c). He was once found wearing his younger sister's clothes, as he was paid to model them by Hannah's costume designer, and normally wears clothing from
American Eagle Outfitters and
Hollister Co..
Jackson works at Rico's Surf Shop on the beach. It is named after the owner, and Jackson is often forced to be nice whenever his bratty, manipulative son, Rico, Jr., drops by.
Jackson plays
volleyball on the school's team. Jackson is also a big fan of both the "
Los Angeles Dodgers", and the "
Los Angeles Lakers". It is noted he likes the Dodgers when Miley points out that he goes to baseball games almost every week. It is noted he likes the Lakers when he says that Miley makes him miss baseball and basketball games.
[1]Jackson has a problem with sugary foods, (It is unclear when this started, although Jackson hints it began when he was 7 at
Easter). Robbie Ray mentioned a Halloween several years before when Jackson ate too much candy and Robbie had to chase him on his skates in a
Yoda costume at 52 mph.
[2]Jackson is tone-deaf and during one of Miley's nightmares, he became a rockstar sensation called Bucky Kentucky.
[3]Jackson and Miley constantly fight. In the episode
We Are Family: Now Get Me Some Water!, Miley is tired of hearing Jackson complain about wanting a raise and goes to make Rico ask his father to give Jackson a raise, but instead gets him fired. Also, in
You Gotta Not Fight for Your Right to Party Jackson and Miley must share a bathroom and start to fight. They end up trusting each other when they get into a dangerous situation.
Jackson's new friend, Thor, embarrasses him. He showed up in the second season and lived in
Minnesota. Jackson remembers he was the new kid once and becomes Thor's only friend despite how embarrassing he thinks Thor is. In the episode
You Gotta Not Fight for Your Right to Party, Jackson and Miley (Hannah at the time) borrow Thor's truck in order to get to their parties. They soon drive off a dark road after almost hitting a deer and are almost driven off a cliff (Which was later revealed to be only 2 feet).
He has many clever ways to get him out of sticky situations or get things that can benefit himself, which most of the time fail. Such as the episode
You Are So Sue-able to Me, he pretends to have had three burritos and sits on planted whoopie cushions and frightens his dad out of coming to the Lakers game so he doesn't hurt his or Thor's feelings.
He is also known to doing many challenges such as jumping a new record of 16 feet from the piano to the couch in the episode
Mascot Love. Or another time in the episode
People Who Use People, where he "didn't" do a burping challenge and he was so "not" the champion! He also took part in a pogo-stick jumping contest in
Me and Mr. Jonas and Mr. Jonas and Mr. Jonas, which he beat by 4 hours.

Robby is a widower and father of
Jackson and
Miley. He gave up his career as the famous singer Robbie Ray
[1] so he could take care of his children after his wife died. He is Hannah Montana's dad and manager/producer when Miley is Hannah, and he writes most of Hannah's songs. When he is Hannah's manager, he wears a
mustache to cover up his identity from people who might recognize him as Miley Stewart's dad. In each episode, he typically gives his daughter advice, often utilizing
reverse psychology. He is fond of sugar, seeing as in some episodes, he has to run a mile or so to treat himself for a slice of cake and he has constantly talked to Jackson about what sugar does to him. He also shown to have two mustaches, one he claims looks like Uncle Earl's and the other Aunt Pearl's.
Robbie Ray and Billy Ray
Robbie Ray is loosely based on Cyrus himself. Before Miley's birth he was a very famous country singer, but walked away from his career after the death of his wife, the cause of which has yet to be revealed. He or others in the show frequently refer to his real life career. The character occasionally refers to Cyrus' own songs, such as in the episode
Ooo, Ooo, Itchy Woman, when he asks, "Linda, you know "
Achy Breaky Heart"?" and also, in the episode
It's a Mannequin's World, when he does the limbo, cracks his back, and says, "Oh, my Achy Breaky Back!" In the episode
Get Down Study-udy-udy, Robby teaches Thor's parrot, Snowball, songs like "I Want My Mullet Back" and "
Wanna Be Your Joe". During the crossover episode
That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana he performs Cyrus' song "I Want My Mullet Back", from
Wanna Be Your Joe. In
Torn Between Two Hannahs he sings "Stand", also from
Wanna Be Your Joe, with Miley while Oliver and Lilly watch.

Rico is an annoying and highly intelligent little boy. He is very manipulative and is spoiled by his father. Rico also tends to pause and say his name proudly even when he is talking quickly.
His father owns
Rico's Surf Shop, the store that
Jackson works at. He first appears in season 1 as a recurring character that annoys Jackson. In season 2, he is added as a main character and the opening credits because he got moved up a few grades and now goes to
Miley and
Jackson's school.
In the ending of
Get Down Study-udy-udy, he recognized Miley's voice, dancing skills, in the tune of
Nobody's Perfect, and it reminded him of Hannah Montana, but she,
Lilly, and
Oliver started laughing and Rico replies with "Yeah, what was I thinking?". He is also revealed to have a photographic memory (
Get Down Study-udy-udy), he is lactose intolerant (
Song Sung Bad), and that he is Latino, saying things like "make it hot, like my Latin blood!" (
Me and Rico Down by the School Yard), and singing
Life's What You Make It in Spanish and expressing that instead of Sarah, he now has a crush on "R-r-r-r-rosalita!" and Jackson argues by saying, "Sar-r-r-r-rah!" (
Song Sung Bad). It is also evident that he has an interest in ballroom dancing, specifically Tango (
We Are Family: Now Get Me Some Water!).

An actor on the television show
Zombie High, he begins to attend Seaview Middle School. His real name is Leslie which he only tells Miley. He is voted "hottie" of the year. His signature line is: "Dude, I slayed you once! Don't make me slay you again." Miley is at first resentful of him because of the perks he is given for being a celebrity, but then the two discover that they are both in love with each other. Jake eventually admits he gets sick of all the attention, and sometimes wants to "turn the whole movie star thing off" and be a regular kid, (he said this in a conversation with Hannah Montana). When he eventually does, Miley realizes her feelings for him. Lilly has always been obsessed with him, as with most of the other girls in school. He has a girlfriend later on in the episode
Good Golly, Miss Dolly, named Rachel who makes Miley really jealous. He is on most of the 4 episodes on the Pop Star Profile DVD.
In the episode
People Who Use People, Jake tries to make Miley jealous and hangs out with an actress named Holly. Vice versa, Miley pretends to date Willis, who is "graduating." Unfortunately, she and Jake both realize that he's only 11 (and 3/4) and Jake accuses Miley of only going out with Willis to make him jealous. Miley then accuses Jake of going out with Holly to make her jealous. Jake tells Miley that Holly is just his co-star - they are dating for publicity. Jake and Miley kiss and become a couple, but then he has to go to Romania for 3 months to film a movie, substituting
Frankie Muniz. Although in
Achy Jakey Heart, Part 1, it said he was gone for 6 months. Miley is upset and shoves him off the railing.
During season 2, Jake returns from
Romania and is hoping that Miley will be waiting for him. To his dismay, she is still very angry at him for kissing and leaving her. He tries to make it up to her by doing everything a girl could want and says that he never stopped thinking about her while wearing a suit of armor. Miley caves and says that she also has not stopped thinking about him, too. She says that they could start with that night, but Jake says that he has to go to the premiere of his movie with his co-star , Marissa Hughes, on a fake date for the press. Miley is angry and says that he is the same jerk that he was 6 months ago but now he's a jerk with a headache and starts to hit him with a salami. Later on, Miley is watching the premiere on TV with Robbie Ray and Lilly. Jake admits on TV that he is in love with a girl named Miley Stewart. After the movie is over, Miley meets Jake outside the premiere, then they make up and kiss. They go on many dates and he names a star after Miley. He reveals to Miley that his real name is Leslie. Miley feels bad and tells Jake that she is Hannah Montana.

Roxy is the aggressive bodyguard of
Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana. She is known for her ridiculous attempts to keep Miley away from boys, and other things she desperately wants. She has also helped get Miley out of sticky situations, like in the episode
Schooly Bully, Roxy poses as a student to help her understand that she needs to learn how to take care of things like bullies on her own. She also has many "moves" that she uses to protect Miley that she names after herself, or using an animal, which is a puma.
In the episode
Take This Job and Love It!, Roxy quit her job with Hannah, after a big feud broke out between the two of them, and took the offer to work with the President. She went back to working with Hannah at the end of the episode.
Roxy was the one who picked out Miley's "Hannah Wig" when Robby took Miley to look for wigs. Roxy was working as a security guard.
Roxy often says her "catchphrase" "Roxy like a puma",which she started in "
Schooly Bully" although she might have started saying it before that.
It is revealed in the episode
I Want You to Want Me ... To Go to Florida that she frequently uses the Stewart's hot tub on the weekends when no one is home.
